Intro to 3D Modeling

UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Course Description

The Digital 3D Modeling course will allow students to utilize digital 3D modeling for concept creation, digital fabrication, and 3D art. This course is an introduction to 3D modeling and will introduce students to different modeling methods with no prior knowledge necessary. Students will learn the difference between organic and inorganic 3D modeling, nurbs and polygon meshes, and the importance of topology. Students will learn how to texture, light, and render their pieces and how to optimize 3D models for 3D printing or 3D animation. The programs utilized will be Blender and Adobe Substance Painter, which are available to students. This course will be comprised of weekly tutorials, in-class exercises, and critiques.

Upon successful completion of the course, a student should be able to:
  • Know how to create 3D models and when to use different modeling techniques and mesh types.
  • Demonstrate proficiency of the fundamentals of the 3D modeling toolkit of the current version of Blender.
  • Be able to define the different parts of a polygon and the different types of polygonal face shapes.
  • Know how to texture, light, and render 3D models.
  • Know how to 3D print 3D models.
  • Demonstrate the ability to utilize 3D tools to create mock-ups of sculptural art or layouts for exhibitions.
  • Demonstrate the ability to create a good topology.
  • Demonstrate the ability to retopologize 3D models.
  • Be able to source images and inspirations for projects.
  • Be able to create accurate orthographic images
  • Demonstrate the ability to critique other students’ works and receive critique on their own work.
  • Demonstrate the ability to problem solve complex issues while 3D modeling, UV mapping, texturing, and rendering.
