Original post: https://www.instagram.com/p/Cl0xgfxLeK0/?hl=en Research and thesis creation are essential components of the Transdisciplinary New Media MFA. This post will look at the research of one of our students, Kirby Emmit Mealer @kirbyemmittart, specifically their thesis “The Uncanny Valley Aesthetic in New Media Art.” The uncanny valley is a phenomenon that occurs when a technological or artistic creation tries too hard to resemble a human being, and the result is a figure that looks and moves almost human yet feels off. The social narratives of these uncanny figures and their interactions with one another and with people can also be observed to further their uncanniness. Masahiro Mori first established the idea of the uncanny valley in 1970 with the emergence of three-dimensional media and the advancement of computer technologies. Today’s new media artists are experimenting with the uncanny valley’s various layers in their creations. This thesis explores the uncanny valley through an aesthetic lens and in relation to new media art pieces and processes to answer the following questions: How is the uncanny valley utilized in new media art? What is its purpose? How is it explored? Furthermore, this research looks to explore the social influences that affect how the uncanny valley is utilized. credit for the projects and pictures included in this post: @lilmiquela im here to learn so :)))))) by @zachblas @pariscollegeofart #artschool #artcollege #artuniversity #artstudents #pariscollegeofart #arteducationr#artanddesign #art #studyabroad #goabroad #internationalstudents#distanceeducation#community #onlineeducation #uncannyvalley

Original Article: https://www.paris.edu/kirby-mealer-at-the-terra-foundation-for-american-art/ Transdisciplinary New Media Student Kirby Mealer presented an original research work at the Terra Foundation for American Art Center in Paris on November 30, 2022. Every semester the Liberal Studies & Art History Department selects outstanding PCA students to conduct a research work in collaboration with the Terra Foundation for American Art and Université Paris Nanterre. The project culminates with a public presentation followed by a discussion at the Terra Center in Paris. Together with Juliette Philippe, art history Master student at Université Paris Nanterre (whose project focused on American Photographer Laura Aguilar), Kirby presented a research work on the theme of Inclusivity in American Art to an audience of peers. Kirby’s project was titled “Inclusivity for Disability in American Art and Museums”: People with disabilities are one of the largest minority groups within the United States, and yet not all artists and artistic spaces take this into consideration for their exhibitions. The utilization of ADA and DEAl* ideals alongside Universal Design can help address and remove the current barriers characterizing museum spaces. This presentation explores how the issue of inclusiveness for disabled visitors is addressed by contemporary American artists and designers such as Alex Dolores Salerno and Shannon Finnegan. It will also provide specific examples of successful disability inclusion within American museums. Additional techniques and tools that artists and museums can promote will be also discussed, more specifically within a new media art perspective. Inclusivity will continue to be an ongoing challenge, as technologies advance and more representation of disability is integrated in the discourse. Please, join us to congratulate Kirby for their excellent work! Event is also advertised on the website of the Art History Department at Nanterre *diversity, equity, accessibility and inclusion Categories Conferences, News, and Students. Digital Media and Technology III is a studio course for second-year students that focuses on both the process and the concept. The course's goal is to refine individual creative practice and working methodology through the exploration of creative modes of prototyping and research. The studio course is guided by Benjamin Gaulon @recyclism , artist, researcher, educator, and cultural producer. Ben has previously released work under the name “recyclism“. His research focuses on the limits and failures of information and communication technologies; planned obsolescence, consumerism, and disposable society; ownership and privacy; through the exploration of détournement, hacking, and recycling. He is currently the director of NØ SCHOOL @noschoolnevers , a non-profit organisation whose mission is to support and promote emerging art and design research and practices that address the social and environmental impacts of information and communication technologies, in France and beyond. @pariscollegeofart #artschool #artcollege #artuniversity #artstudents #pariscollegeofart #arteducationr#artanddesign #art #studyabroad #goabroad #internationalstudents #distanceeducation#community #onlineeducation Written by pca.transdisciplinarynewmedia
Original post: https://www.instagram.com/p/Ci-StSAI_X_/?hl=en On October 11, PCA hosted the first of a series of meetings organized as part of the PCA x Terra Foundation x Université Paris Nanterre partnership. During that first meeting, MFA in Transdisciplinary New Media student Kirby Mealer @kirbyemmittart presented their work to a group of 46 MA students in art history from Université Paris Nanterre and their instructor. They then engaged in a discussion about research methodologies and the study of American art. The following meeting will bring Kirby to Université Paris Nanterre early November for a methodology session, and to the Terra Foundation for American Art Center in Paris for a final public presentation the week of November 21. The PCA x Terra Research Program gives the selected students the chance to conduct high level research on a specific topic related to American Art. The monthly workshops and final presentation are opportunities to meet peers from French universities and to compare research methodologies in an international and interdisciplinary context. Original post: https://www.instagram.com/p/Ci-StSAI_X_/?hl=en ⚡️Student projects⚡️”Digital v/s Physical” is a new media project by MFA student @kirbyemmittart “My drawing practice has always been entirely digital and never have I brought it into the physical world. Using the AxiDraw, I will be taking drawings that I created digitally and recreate them into the physical world. Usually, people start with physical art and then transition into digital art. Starting digital art at the age of 11, I have always been more comfortable with digital art. I’ve found it more malleable and easier to explore than physical art. There is a difference between the art pieces in the digital and physical. Knowing that there is no way to make the art exactly the same, I explored different colors and brush techniques for both the digital and physical art to create unique pieces. The ending sets of drawings are both related in content, but can stand alone as both physical and digital pieces separately. In the end, they are not copies of each other. They are unique. You can never perfectly replicate the digital. And the physical copies will never be exactly the same. Each brush stroke cannot be done the same way twice, and the water color will not bleed the same way each time.“ Kirby Kirby-Emmitt Mealer @pariscollegeofar #artschool #artcollege #artuniversity #artstudents #pariscollegeofart #arteducation#artanddesign #art #studyabroad #goabroad #internationalstudents #distanceeducation#community #onlineeducation Written by pca.transdisciplinarynewmedia

Original Post: https://www.instagram.com/p/CaUaRqnM0Dd/?hl=en Today at #MTNMstudentProjects, let's learn about Kirby's work @kirbyemmittart "In a world where the digital presence is just as relevant as a physical presence, I am bringing a digital human form to a physical space while still keeping it within the digital realm by putting a digital human into a virtual reality headset. Utilizing my own limitations, I will make a human as realistic as possible but acknowledge I cannot fully encompass realism. It is a way to express that digitally, we cannot emulate life; but it does not matter because we can still relate to the digital form, no matter how uneasy it can make us feel. Utilizing 3D modeling and motion capture, I will be putting a virtual human into a virtual 3D space. I want to incorporate the uncanny valley into this work, so I will try to make the 3D model as realistic as possible. For the human, I want it to seem as if this is an average person from day-to-day life and be either male, female, or neither. However, the viewer wants to perceive them is up to the viewer." #artist #artwork #newmediaart #pariscollegeofart |
